Glenn van Straalen en D34G Racing hebben in goed onderling overleg besloten om per direct een punt te zetten achter hun samenwerking in het FIM Supersport World Championship. De 24-jarige coureur uit Hoogkarspel heeft sinds zijn zware crash tijdens de officiële test op Phillip Island begin dit jaar moeite gehad om zijn oude vorm terug te vinden.
Glenn van Straalen begon het seizoen vol vertrouwen en voelde zich goed op de Ducati Panigale V2 955 van het Italiaanse team. Tijdens de eerste testdag op Phillip Island ging het echter mis: de Nederlander kwam ten val over een oliespoor dat door een andere rijder op het circuit was achtergelaten. Bij deze crash liep hij een hersenschudding op.
Na uitgebreide medische checks keerde hij eind maart tijdens de Portugese ronde in Portimão terug, waar hij fit werd verklaard door de artsen. Toch bleek in de races nadien dat hij fysiek nog niet volledig was hersteld. De resultaten bleven uit en de prestaties bleven achter bij het niveau van eerdere seizoenen, waarin hij meerdere podiumplaatsen en zelfs een overwinning wist te behalen.
Na overleg met teambaas Davide Giugliano en het teammanagement is besloten om de samenwerking te beëindigen.
Glenn van Straalen: “Het is jammer om de samenwerking met Davide en het team te beëindigen, maar op dit moment is het de beste beslissing. Na de hersenschudding in Australië hebben we de tijd genomen om weer ‘fit to ride’ te worden, maar sindsdien is de vooruitgang achtergebleven bij de verwachtingen. Ik wil het team bedanken, ze zijn erg begripvol geweest en hebben veel moeite gedaan om mij een goed gevoel op de motor te geven. Maar we moeten erkennen dat ik nog niet volledig hersteld ben van de crash tijdens de test op Phillip Island. Davide is een voormalig professioneel coureur en begrijpt wat ik doormaak; hij is erg begripvol geweest, en het team heeft me altijd de tijd gegeven om te herstellen. We hebben samen besloten dat het met een volledig race- en testprogramma op dit moment niet haalbaar is. Ik neem nu de tijd om volledig te herstellen en terug te komen op volle kracht en in topvorm. Ik wens het team het allerbeste.”
Davide Giugliano: “Het doet me uiteraard veel verdriet om deze mededeling te moeten doen. Allereerst wil ik Glenn bedanken voor zijn professionaliteit. Hij is echt een goede gozer, een echte professional, en ik geloof volledig in zijn kwaliteiten als coureur. We begonnen de voorbereiding op het seizoen goed, met Glenn die sterk van start ging en tijdens de wintertests liet zien dat hij op het hoogste niveau kon meedoen. Toen gingen we naar Australië en, buiten zijn schuld om, maakte hij een zware crash mee. De val was heftig en vond plaats in één van de snelste sectoren van het circuit. De klap was groot, en daar kwam ook nog een flinke hersenschudding bij. Als team hebben we hem alle tijd gegeven om te herstellen; we kregen hem terug in Portimão, een ronde waarin hij de uitstekende instelling liet zien die hem kenmerkt. Daarna brak een moeilijkere periode aan: in plaats van vooruitgang te boeken, stagneerden de prestaties. We kwamen tot de gezamenlijke conclusie – tussen team, rijder en management – dat Glenn meer tijd en rust nodig heeft om terug te keren naar het niveau waarop hij hoort te rijden: vechtend voor de topposities. Daarom hebben we in goed overleg besloten het huidige contract te beëindigen. Ik wens Glenn het allerbeste, de rust die hij nodig heeft, en ik hoop hem snel weer op de baan te zien strijden voor de plaatsen die hij verdient. Wat betreft het team: wij gaan door met ons werk en zullen snel delen wat de volgende stappen zijn.”
D34G Racing and Glenn van Straalen mutually agree to part ways
Team D34G Racing and Glenn van Straalen have jointly decided to terminate their agreement for the 2025 edition of the WorldSSP Championship. After a promising start to the offseason, with great feeling aboard the team’s Panigale V2 955 machine in the openingsession of the Phillip Island official test, The 24-year-old from Hoogkarspel, the Netherlands, lost control of his Ducati machine due to no fault of his own, after running on oil left on track by an opponent bike ahead of him – along with other competitors. After extensive medical checks, he was diagnosed with a concussion.
Despite returning to action at Portimão in late March – after being declared fit to ride by the medical staff – van Straalen has struggled to regain the ideal condition to perform at the level shown in previous years (multiple podiums and last year a race win in the series). With some more time needed to make a full recovery, van Straalen and the team have agreed on terminating the contract in order for the rider to focus on his health.

“It is regrettable to end the relationship with Davide and the team but, at the moment, it is for the best. After the concussion in Australia, we took time to come back ‘fit to ride’ but since then, the progress has stayed behind expectations. I want to express my gratitude to the team, they have been very supportive and made a lot of effort to give me a good feeling with the bike, but we have had to acknowledge that I am not fully recovered after the crash at Phillip Islandtest. Davide is a former professional rider and knows what I am going through; he has been very considerate, the team has always been patient and given me time to recover. We have decided together that this is not possible with a full racing and testing program. I am now taking the time to fully recover and to come back fully fit and strong. I wish the team all the best.”

“I’m obviously very saddened to be sharing this announcement. First of all, I’d like to thank Glenn for his professionalism. He’s really a good guy, a great professional and I fully believe in his abilities as a rider. We started preparations to the season well, with Glenn off to a good start and very competitive during winter testing as he showed he could compete at the highest of his possibilities. Then we went to Australia and, through no fault of his own, he suffered a significant crash. The tumble was a big one and happened in one of the fastest sections of the track, and the big impact came also with a notable concussion. As a team, we gave him all the time to recover; we managed to have him back in Portimão, a round in which he showed the excellent approach that characterises him. After that, we started to experience a more challenging time: instead of improving, our performance stagnated. We came to the mutual conclusion – as agreed between team, rider and management – that Glenn needs further time and tranquillity in order to return to the level that has distinguished him – meaning to fight for top positions. Therefore, we mutually agreed, for the good of both rider and team, to take the difficult decision of terminating the current agreement. I wish Glenn all the best, a bit of rest and I hope to see him back on track soon in order to fight for the positions he belongs to. Regarding the team, we’ll continue our work, and we’ll share what’s next as soon as possible”.
