Last weekend Glenn van Straalen rode on the circuit of Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The penultimate race weekend for the FIM World Supersport Championship was scheduled here during the weekend of September 29 to October 1. During the first race Glenn crashed hard but managed to recover in race two with a nice sixth place.

It was a warm weekend in Portugal with temperatures around thirty degrees. The weekend kicked off on Friday with the two free practice sessions. The EAB Racing Team rider got up to speed well and was able to build a strong rhythm during the sessions. In the end of the second training session, the Yamaha rider had a technical problem and forced him to stop. Just before that, Glenn managed to set a good time with eleventh place overall.

On Saturday morning we saw the Superpole session. It was important for the rider from Hoogkarspel to take a step forward. This is what he did and improved his lap time significantly. In the early stages of qualifying, Glenn set a fifth lap time. Halfway through the session, he has an innocent fall. In the final minutes of Superpole we see a red flag situation. After that everybody has time to set one lap time. Glenn is unable to improve and start the races from eighth place.

Unfortunately, the first race did not go as Glenn had hoped. During the opening phase he managed to position himself well and maintained himself around eighth place. Later in the race Glenn makes a mistake and has to go wide and loses some positions. After that it is difficult to keep up with the pace of the riders in front of him and he is in tenth place for a long time. The young Dutchman loses the front of his machine in the final laps and crashes out of the race.

Despite the heavy crash in the first race, Glenn is ready for battle during race two. He gets off to a good start and gains a position. A group is formed fighting for fourth position and Glenn shows up well and fights hard for his position. Later in the race he rides alone but sets fast times and a good pace. He crosses the line in a nice sixth place. A positive end to the weekend at the Algarve circuit.

Glenn: “Overall I am satisfied with the weekend in Portugal. During the free practice sessions we quickly got up to speed and that gave us confidence during the weekend. In Superpole we managed to qualify in eighth place with a good pace. In the first race it was difficult to keep up the pace during the opening laps. After that the rhythm was better, but unfortunately I crashed out of the race in the final laps. We managed to finish the second race in sixth place. This is a great result after the crash on Saturday. This gives confidence and shows that we belong to the top. We take this feeling with us to the last race in Jerez. We are going to recharge and get ready for the last race of the season. This will take place at the end of the month on the weekend of October 27 to 29 at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto circuit in Spain.

Glenn van Straalen is goed op snelheid tijdens WK Supersport in Portimão

Afgelopen weekend reed Glenn van Straalen op het circuit van Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Hier stond in het weekend van 29 september tot 1 oktober het voorlaatste raceweekend voor het FIM World Supersport Championship op het programma. Tijdens de eerste race komt Glenn hard ten val maar weet zich te herpakken in race twee met een mooie zesde plaats.

Het was een warm weekend in Portugal met tempraturen rondom de dertig graden. Op vrijdag werd het weekend afgetrapt met de twee vrije trainingen. De EAB Racing Team rijder kwam goed op snelheid en kon gedurende de sessies een sterk ritme opbouwen. In de slotfase van de tweede training kwam de Yamaha-coureur stil te staan vanwege technische problemen. Net daarvoor weet Glenn een goede tijd op de klokken gezet met een elfde plaats algemeen.  

Op zaterdagochtend zagen we de Superpole sessie. Het was zaak voor de coureur uit Hoogkarspel om een stap voorwaarts te maken. Dit is wat hij deed en verbeterde zijn rondetijd aanzienlijk. In de beginfase van de kwalificatie zette Glenn een vijfde rondetijd. Halverwege de sessie kent Glenn een onschuldige valpartij, waarbij hij onderuit schuift. In de laatste minuten van de Superpole zien we een rode vlag situatie, waarbij er vervolgens genoeg tijd is om één rondetijd te kunnen zetten. Glenn weet zich niet te verbeteren en mag de wedstrijden aanvangen vanaf de achtste plaats.

De eerste race verliep helaas niet zoals Glenn had gehoopt. Tijdens de openingsfase weet hij zich goed te positioneren en handhaaft zich rondom de achtste plaats. Later in de wedstrijd maakt Glenn een foutje en moet daarbij wijd sturen en verliest enkele posities. Daarna is het lastig om het tempo van de rijders voor hem te rijden en rijdt lange tijd op de tiende plaats. De jonge Nederlander verliest in de slotfase de voorkant van zijn machine en crasht uit de wedstrijd.

Ondanks de stevige valpartij in de eerste wedstrijd is Glenn klaar voor de strijd tijdens race twee. Hij kent een goede start en wint daarbij een positie. Er ontstaat een groep vechtend voor de vierde positie in de wedstrijd en Glenn laat zich goed zien en vecht hard voor zijn positie. Later in de wedstrijd komt hij alleen te rijden maar zet scherpe tijden op de klokken en rijdt een goed tempo. Uiteindelijk komt hij als zesde over de streep. Een positieve afsluiter van het weekend op het circuit van Algarve.

Glenn: “Overal ben ik tevreden met het weekend in Portugal. Tijdens de vrije trainingen waren we gauw op snelheid en dat gaf vertrouwen in de loop van het weekend. In de Superpole wisten we ons te kwalificeren op een achtste plaats met een goed tempo. In de eerste wedstrijd had ik het iets lastiger tijdens openingsronden. Daarna was het ritme beter. Helaas crashte ik in de eindfase uit de wedstrijd. De tweede race wisten we af te sluiten op een zesde plek. Dit is een super resultaat naar de valpartij op zaterdag. Dit geeft het vertrouwen en laat zien dat wij bij de top horen. Dit gevoel nemen we mee naar de laatste wedstrijd in Jerez. Bedankt aan het EAB Racig Team voor dit weekend.”

We gaan ons opladen en klaarmaken voor de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen. Deze vindt eind van de maand plaats in het weekend van 27 tot en met 29 oktober op het circuit van Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto in Spanje.
